This metal detector may not seem like much security and perhaps it seems like it would be easy to go in and out of the pods as one pleases. However, once an inmate walks through these doors, it may take years before an inmate can dream of leaving their pods and experiencing the outside world. In a way, this illusion applies to the criminal justice system in general. From an outside point of view, it may seem easy for a prisoner to serve their time and not return to their criminal past. However, many of the inmates I've spoken with are in prison for their fourth or fifth stay and don't expect it to be their last. One inmate I played cards with described the life of crime as "a slow march to death", but said that he was too deep to ever escape.
